Should Martin Luther King day be an international holiday? And also, more widely recognized in the US?
I'm a Canadian who works with American clients. I was expecting an easy day at work today being a national holiday in the US (it's Martin Luther King day for non-Americans), but was surprised to find most Americans working today. Given the racism that still exists in the US and the world today, I was surprised that more people wouldn't have it off. Americans, should more people in the US have today off to help re-inforce the significance of what MLK did?
Non-Americans, racism is not just a US problem, it exists around the world. Europeans make monkey noises when black players get the ball in soccer/football. In Rwanda, in the 90's racism led them to hitting each other over the head with machettes. Plus there is anti-Chinese racism in Japan. Jews and Arabs. Canadians hate Polar bears. The list of racism examples around the world goes, on an on.
Non-Americans, do you think Martin Luther King day would be a good holiday to adopt in your country to help put an end to racism?
