Pele Moments
The Near Misses, Who Succeeded in Soccer!
As the saying goes life seldom gives you another chance, and it is true to an extent but it is certainly not the end. There is always that chance to win again and prove it. The student who missed the university cut-off gave it the best shot, and made it the second time around. The true champions of the game (and even of life) have the uncanny ability to make it happen again, get the same chances. The key to these champions success is that they believed in themselves and never gave up despite their failed attempt. When you are out to prove a point and have the determination, success is pretty much assured. The greats who gave up will always remain the "What if's?"
Football has had its great comeback moments and the champions had the will power to make it happen. A dream was made possible (again). The world cup 1970 saw a resilient and committed German team. Any team which sported the likes of Gerd Muller, Uwe Seeler and Beckenbauer, were by no means underdogs. They were well on their way to the finals, until the greatest game in world cup history stopped them. The semifinal against Italy was a classic and no football has come close. The game was decided in the hundred and eleventh minute by a goal in extra time. In the course of the game Beckenbauer sustained a broken clavicle from an Italian foul but refused to stop playing and played with his arm in a sling as he was critical to the German team. A mark of a true champion, he was a true team man. Though a win would have pitted them against Brazil, featuring Pelé (who was in his fourth and final World Cup), Jairzinho, Rivelino and Tostão, who I doubt any team could beat. He lost this chance but came back in 1974 to win against a very tough opposition Holland and Cruyff. Germany had lost the 1982 and 1986 finals and it was Beckenbauer again, this time as coach who got them the trophy in 1990. He never seemed to lose hope.
Then came the 1998 world cup, this was the first world cup I had followed keenly and saw the emerging superstar Ronaldo and hoped Brazil could repeat the magic of 1994 world cup. No Romario but Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Dunga, and Roberto Carlos more than made up for his absence and Brazil was the team to beat. Not surprisingly they made it to the finals and had to beat the underdogs France, Brazil seemed set for another world cup. Ronaldo's fitness, his underperformance (he did not score) and the brilliance of Zidane erased Brazil's chances in the final. Ronaldo was awarded the player of the tournament but that was little consolation. After the debacle in the finals came a spate of injuries for Ronaldo, he was written off as overweight and the Golden Boy had lost his magic touch (the press can be so cruel). Ronaldo made it to the 2002 world cup squad despite his injuries and poor form. He had a point to prove and here was the ideal platform to silence his critics once and for all. He was in sublime form scoring eight goals and taking Brazil to victory (this time he scored twice in the finals). He won the Golden Boot for his efforts and the coveted trophy.
The true winners, the champions never give up and always believe that it is possible to get back those lost chances. Maybe that is the simple reason they are champions. The greats can get back the lost chances but the greatest not only get back the impossible chances but also capitalize on them. Maybe the 2003 Indian Cricket team can take a cue form the Brazilians and Ronaldo. I hope Rahul Dravid is listening; the Cricket World Cup is merely a year away. I hope that university student is listening and I hope all those who did not make it this time do not give up.
