Are European video games compatible on US systems?
I am puchasing a Dutch soccer video game new from Holland. One for Xbox and one for PS2. Will these be compatible with Xbox and PS2 systems purchased here in the US? I realize that the language will be in Dutch, and that is fine, but I'm just wondering about compatbility issues.
There are two different types of encoding for video games: PAL and NTSC.
NTSC is for North American systems, while PAL is for pretty much everything else.
The only reason they won't work interchangably is because the BIOS is programmed to only play games from its own region. This is done primarily, I believe, to encourage (read: force) consumers to purchase games from their own country (USA).
Unfortunately, the only way I know around this is to modify either your Xbox or PS2 by either a) installing a chip that has a modified BIOS which will bypass the original BIOS and allow non-local games to play or b) doing what's known as a "softmod" where you gain access to the BIOS through bugs in game software (Mechwarriors and James Bond Everything or Nothing are titles that can be used, I think) and "flash" a hacked BIOS over the original.
I've modified 4 Xboxes and the results are pretty impressive. It allows you to do a whole bunch of things with the system that you might have never thought to do otherwise.
